We support the Mixed Member Proportional Representation
[MMP] electoral system, as practised in New Zealand and
Germany. This is the most democratic and fairest representation
available of all the systems currently at use in the world's
democracies.
The current 'first past the post' system came from Britain where it
evolved in the 1800s/1900s as a means of keeping in place the
heirarchical class system for which Britain is famous. Are we to be
stuck forever with this antiquated system which does reflect the
people's wishes simply because the British still use it for their
federal elections?
Ironically, they even use proportional representation
for the European parliament and for their Scottish, Welsh and
Northern Irish provincial parliaments. All other European countries
have used some form of proportional representation for years.
Thank you for the work you are doing in trying to bring about a
more democratic system to our provincial and hopefully federal
electoral systems.
